Three Differences Between Used Cisco Routers and Modems

Routers and Modems are two of the most widely-used peripherals, yet many people still don’t know the function each serves.

A common question we get asked is. ‘what is the difference between a used Cisco router and a modem?’. Routers and modems are two of the most widely-used peripherals, yet many people still don’t know the function each serves. Fortunately, for our readers the differences are very easy to understand.

  1. A router is a small box that connects several computers to the same network. While many of the older router models we once sold offered several Ethernet ports for wired connections, most routers that are being sold now are capable offering wireless connectivity.
  2.  Each wireless Cisco router comes with one or two antennas, although some models that we sell come with the antennas inside the boxes. The primary function of a wireless router is to permit computers and other devices, such as smart phones, printers, VoIP phones to join the same network.
  3. While connecting to a router gives you access to a local network, it does not provide you with access to the internet. In order for devices to be connected to the internet, the router must be hooked up to the modem. That is why many routers come with an Ethernet port that is made to connect to the Ethernet port of a cable or DSL modem. By connecting your Cisco router to the modem, you give all devices connected to the router access to the modem, which in turn gives you access to the internet.

While the router and modem are often sold as separate products, in some cases, the modem and router may be combined into one device. This type of device is sometimes offered by ISPs to simplify the setup process.
